Looking for plant information? We will be adding info on our seasonal plants in alphabetical order.
ANNUAL or PERENNIAL describes the plant in the Northeast.
ANNUAL - Like a tiny petunia on steroids, calibrachoa (also known as million bells) grows and flowers at an amazing rate. Often confused for a petunia, million bells makes a splash no matter where you put it in the garden. It is perfect for containers or hanging baskets but also can be tucked into the front of a border where it will spill out onto sidewalk or patio. In fact, it may be the ultimate "spiller" for container gardens as long as you give it ample water and fertilizer, which it needs to fuel its astounding growth. Loves full sun.
ANNUAL - Ageratum are small plants grown as annuals with a dense growth habit. Flowers are rounded clusters borne from midsummer until first frost. Leaves are oval, downy and have heart-shaped bases. Excellent bedding or container plant.
ANNUAL - Alternantheras, of which there are possibly 200 species, are brilliantly colored foliage plants used for their leaves. Different species and varieties are strongly marked with yellow, pink, red, and coppery red. Alternantheras are at their best combined in patterns of color in formal bedding situations, but they also make handsome container and hanging basket specimens. They can also be planted in design combinations with flowering annuals, the brightly colored leaves being especially effective with light-colored flowers.
ANNUAL - Sweet alyssum is a type of annual that flowers for months. A member of the mustard family, sweet alyssum is quite fragrant. Sweet alyssum is a type of annual that flowers for months, even through the winter in milder climates. A member of the mustard family, sweet alyssum is quite fragrant.
ANNU
AL - Angelonia is also called summer snapdragon, and once you get a good look at it, you'll know why. It has salvia-like flower spires that reach a foot or 2 high, but they're studded with fascinating snapdragon-like flowers with beautiful colorations in purple, white, or pink. It's the perfect plant for adding bright color to hot, sunny spaces. This tough plant blooms all summer long with spirelike spikes of blooms.
TROPICAL - The red, heart-shaped flower of Anthuriums is really a spathe or a waxy, modified leaf flaring out from the base of a fleshy spike (spadix) where the tiny real flowers grow. The anthurium flowers appear as a roughness on the spadix as compared to a smooth spadix. Most common colors of anthuriums are red and shades of red.
ANNUAL - Argyranthemum is a versatile annual that provides a great color display during the summer months. Historically grown for cut flower usage, it is catching on as an ideal annual suitable for containers, rock gardens, and borders. It has a fast growing, mounding habit and is available in many varieties to suit anyone’s taste.
ANNUAL - Asparagus fern is primarily used as a filler plant in containers of mixed flowers growing during the summer. It works in wall boxes, hanging baskets, window boxes, and planters of all kinds. Asparagus fern also grows well in partially shaded ground beds, alone, or intermixed with larger, shade-tolerant flowers such as tuberous begonias, Because asparagus fern is a vigorous plant, combine with plants of some stature so they are not overpowered.
DOOR FLOWERING - Azalea characteristics include leaves which are evergreen and smaller than most rhododendron, spring flowers that are trumpet-shaped and white, pink, red, or purple. Form is dense and rounded regardless of height. All azaleas love well-drained, acid soil and should be planted high, preferably on raised beds. Partial shade is preferable too. It is arguable that azaleas produce more flowers in full sun, but maintenance and water requirements become important issues then. We carry Azalea in our nursery yard as a shrub and in our greenhouse as a non-hardy plant at Easter and Christmas.ANNUAL - Ba
copa was once an unusual flower, but in recent years it's become very popular in garden centers. And why not? It's adorable! This plant has long, cascading stems that smother themselves in tiny, perfect, five-petal flowers. It's become a favorite for selling in hanging baskets where its pretty trailing habit can be shown off. Also try in pots, planters, and window boxes. Full sun to partial shade, rich well drained soil. Water regularly during dry weather. Dry weather causes flowers to drop. 3" tall but spreads to 18".
ANNUAL - Dragon Wing plants fill in fast to form lush garden beds that last up to the first frost. Use Dragon Wing Begonias as the focus of stunning mixed or solo containers and hanging baskets. Dragon Wing also combines well with other shade or partial shade varieties
ANNUAL - "Non-Stop" Begonias produce masses of perfectly formed, medium-sized flowers. It has all the strength and vigor of regular Begonias, but is actually the first strain to produce truly compact, double flowering blooms and a real dwarf growing habit, making it wind resistant. They start flowering very early...flower buds actually appear with the first leaves. With a long continuous blooming peroid (June to fall) and low growth habit, they are excellent for low borders and window boxes. Also used in groups of three at focal points or in patio tubs
ANNUAL - Rex Begonias are kings of the Begonia World, that's why they are called REX, which in Latin means KING. These types of begonias display wildly varied leaves streaked, bordered, spotted, and splotched by many colors. They also flower, but usually the flowers are overshadowed by the striking foliage.
ANNUAL -
The Solenia Begonia is similar to the wax in that its blossoms are doubled and it is somewhat more drought-resistant than other Begonia varieties; but there the similarities end. The biggest advantage the Solenia Begonia has is that it has been bred to be a sun-lover. This particular variety thrives in full sun, though it is not completely averse to partial shade. They love the heat and are remarkably resistant to mildew. It has smaller leaves, but more of them, gently cradling the tropical blossoms. The foliage is glossy and ranges in color from medium-green to dark bluish-green to green with undertones of gray or silver. Plant Solenia Begonias en masse to create an eye-catching focal point. They perform as well in containers or even in window and deck boxes and along borders and walkways.
ANNUAL - The waxy, succulent leaves and colorful flowers of the wax begonia are familiar to beginning and experienced yardeners alike. Adaptable and forgiving plants, they have a neat, compact habit, attractive flowers and foliage. They will give you a long season of blooms while growing in part shade; even in deep shade with fewer blooms. They are ideal for beds, borders, or containers in sun or shade and are commonly used as edging plants or massed in groups.
ANNUAL - This is a pleasant, low growing groundcover with mauve daisy flowers to 2cm wide through Spring and Summer. It's good plant for hanging baskets and tolerates full or part shade with best results achieved in well-drained soil
ANNUAL - The browallia, or sapphire flower, is an annual flower that blooms heavily from early spring to fall frost. The sapphire-blue flowers are grown in beds, borders, or rock gardens. Compact plants make good edges for a tall border and are excellent container plants.
TROPICAL - The Canna ‘Tropicana’ is considered by many to be the most exotic of all cannas. Cannas are already known for making a bold statement in the garden. Their colorful foliage and intense flower colors make them stand out among other plants. Canna ‘Tropicana’ takes things a step further with tropical-looking, varieagated leaves and almost fluorescent-looking deep orange flowers.
