Looking for plant information? We will be adding info on our seasonal plants in alphabetical order.
ANNUAL or PERENNIAL describes the plant in the Northeast.
TROPICAL - The Mandevilla is a beautiful vining plant that features glossy leaves and billowy, fragrant flowers in colors ranging from white to deep red. Since it is a climbing plant, the Mandevilla is wonderful for planting near a trellis, mailbox or fence, and will produce spectacular blooms.
ANNUAL - Marigolds produce densely double gold, orange, yellow, or lemon-yellow flowerheads. In general, marigolds are robust, trouble free plants which branch vigorously. Leaves are finely divided, to 4 inches long, and medium green. Abundant pale yellow to orange blooms with large, dense collections of small petals from early summer to frost. Though thought of as a summer annual, works well for fall plantings too, especially as a chrysanthemum substitute. Great for borders and containers. A natural insect repellant for herb and vegetable gardens. Remove and discard spent flowers to encourage extended flowering and reduce "housing" for insects and disease
ANNUAL - The melampodium is an annual flower with bright green leaves that have many yellow, daisy-like flowers peering forth all summer long. Melampodium needs full sun. An average to rich, moist but well-drained soil is satisfactory. Plants should not be allowed to dry out. Plant outdoors as soon as all danger of frost has passed and the ground is warm.
BULB - Narrow strap-shaped green leaves grow basally, appearing mid to late winter prior to flowers. Small, bell-shaped, blue to purple flowers are arranged tightly along a raceme, appearing a bit like a bunch of grapes. Some varieties have white flowers. Excellent underplanting for other bulbs, especially tulips.
ANNUAL - Like their more common cousins, New Guinea impatiens provide hard-to-find brilliant color in shade. And it's not just the flowers. The foliage is often brilliantly, exotically colorful as well. These tropical plants really shine in containers, where they thrive in the perfect soil and drainage, but they also do well in the ground as long as you take the time to improve the soil and work in plenty of compost. Note that they're a bit more sun-tolerant than common impatiens. They work as a excellent bedding and border plant.
ANNUAL - Nierembergia has attractive, thin, narrow leaves topped at the ends with bluish or purple flowers. The plants develop outward rather than upward, up to six inches high, and will spread a foot. Grow nierembergia as a flowering ground cover in full sun, massed in large patches or beds. It's an ideal edging plant for beds and borders and for lining paths and walkways with ease.
ANNUAL - In our area, the northeast, Osteospermum enjoy the springtime. The heat of summer can exhaust them. They come in a range of whites, pinks and purples. Great for containers and bedding.
ANNUAL - Pansy plants are cheerful, blooming flowers, among the first of the season to offer winter color in many areas. Growing pansies are commonly seen in late fall and early spring in more northern areas of the U.S, while in subtropical areas pansies bloom throughout the winter Bright Colors for spring and fall.
ANNUAL GRASS - Popular, drought tolerant grass forms neat clumps of purplish maroon blades. Topped by rose red flower spikes summer through fall. Beautiful as landscape specimen or planted in groups. Provides quick annual color in any climate.
ANNUAL - Pentas is a summer annual. It has long, oval, hairy leaves. Tight, 4 inch clusters of small, star-like flowers in various colors. Regular deadheading will prolong the bloom time. Requires part shade to full sun, regular moisture, and monthly fertilizing
TROPICAL - Magnificent, green and deep plum coleus-like foliage with hot pink accenting resembles a lightning flash reaching to the tips of the leaves. This heat lover tolerates some shade; however, best coloration occurs in full sun. It is a delightful contrast to flowering annuals. Grows to 12-16 inches tall.
PERENNIAL - Showy, clump-forming perennial with a brilliant floral display. Leaves are narrow and toothed, to 5 inches long. From summer to fall, fragrant, 1 inch blooms appear in huge clusters on tall stems above the foliage. Many named varieties are available in a wide range of colors. Great in borders, rock gardens, formal beds and meadows
ANNUAL - Petunia Plants are unbeatable for masses of trailing long lasting blooms spilling gracefully from baskets, planters or borders. Extremely long blooming - early spring to first frost - with avalanches of smaller flowers and lush, heart-shaped leaves.
TROPICAL - Is a fast growing shrub bearing trusses of deep blue flowers during spring-autumn. It can be used as a hedge or shrub, or espaliered against a wall. It will even climb through other plants, so it makes the perfect gap filler. It is drought tolerant needing little maintenance. Prefers a full sun to part shade position.
ANNUAL - Primrose flowers grow from a rosette of long, narrow leaves. The color range is immense from a sky color to midnight blue, pinks, reds of all hues, yellow, orange, and lavender. Many of them are centered with a contrasting yellow eye; still others have narrow bands of color in the petals. Early spring blooms.
ANNUAL - Brilliantly colored flowers are ranunculus' chief attraction, and they are indeed special. They most often come in multiple layers of delicate, crepe paper--thin petals, looking like an origami masterwork. Ranunculus (R. asiaticus) excel in southern and western gardens, and make terrific container plants everywhere. Bright colors for early spring
PERENNIAL - Rudbeckia has suffered from over exposure, yet there is a great deal of variety within the species and they are true workhorses, with very few problems. Most Rudbeckia come in shades of yellow or orange, with a dark center seed head, but there are also russet, bronze and mahogany tones. The flowers are daisy-like and can be single, semi-double and fully-double. You can tell them apart from coneflowers by their coarse-textured, hairy leaves.
ANNUAL - Whether you have sun or shade, a dry garden or lots of rainfall, there's an annual salvia that you'll find indispensable. All attract hummingbirds, especially the red ones, and are great picks for hot, dry sites where you want tons of color all season. Most salvias don't like cool weather, so plant them outdoors after all danger of frost has passed.
PERENNIAL - These prolific plants bloom early and heavy, and continue on a lesser degree if the spent flowers are cut. The flowers are long stemmed. The foliage is neat, forming a low mound of decorative leaves. Divide clump in spring every few years to rejuvenate the plant..
